rokero, Darfur – A devastating measles outbreak that swept through the Rokero region of Darfur between June adn October 2024, infecting over 1,000 people, primarily children under five, has been brought under control thanks to a swift and persistent vaccination campaign led by Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF).

The campaign,wich vaccinated 9,634 children,faced significant challenges. “We had to overcome obstacles like tough and sometimes blocked roads, as well as unstable vaccine supplies,” explained Marwan Taher, MSF project coordinator in Rokero.

Despite these hurdles, MSF teams worked tirelessly, collaborating with community leaders to raise awareness about the vaccination drive and reach the most vulnerable populations.

For families like Fatima’s, the campaign brought much-needed relief. “For weeks, we didn’t know what to do,” she shared. “My youngest child had a cough and fever, and others in our village were falling ill. When we heard about the vaccination team, we whent promptly.”

The journey to the vaccination points was arduous for some families. Abdurrahman, a father of five, described the difficult trek: “The road was challenging, and it had rained the night before. But because so many children were getting sick in our village, we had to make the journey. Now, I’m relieved that my children are protected.”

While the measles outbreak has been contained, the situation in Rokero remains precarious. Access to essential healthcare is extremely limited,and malnutrition is a growing concern.

During the vaccination campaign, MSF teams conducted a malnutrition survey among the vaccinated children. The results were alarming: nearly 300 children under five were found to be suffering from severe acute malnutrition, and 1,062 children aged six to 59 months were experiencing moderate acute malnutrition.

“The malnutrition situation in Rokero is dire,” stated Merce Rocaspan, MSF emergency medicine specialist. “The ongoing conflict is creating a humanitarian catastrophe with severe health consequences.”
