France is monitoring a series of measles cases reported in the first quarter of 2026, with health authorities emphasizing the need for continued vaccination to prevent further spread and serious complications.

According to a national bulletin published on April 16, 2026, by Santé publique France, 44 cases of measles were reported between January 1 and March 31, 2026. This total includes 14 new cases recorded specifically in March.

While these figures indicate the virus is still circulating, they represent a significant decrease compared to the same period in the previous year. In the first quarter of 2025, France recorded 341 cases.

Clinical Impact and Hospitalizations

Despite the lower overall number of cases compared to 2025, the disease continues to cause severe health issues. Of the 44 cases reported in the first three months of 2026, 18 patients, or 41%, required hospitalization. Two of those patients were admitted to intensive care.

Complications were observed in 11 cases, representing 25% of the reported total. These complications included one case of encephalitis and five cases of pneumonia.

Santé publique France reported that no deaths had been recorded among these cases as of the April 16 publication date.

Regional Alerts in Grand Est

Public health alerts have intensified in specific regions. On April 30, 2026, the Agence Régionale de Santé (ARS) Grand Est issued a warning stating that the virus is actively circulating, with a particular focus on the Bas-Rhin department.

Measles outbreaks in Europe: Cases spike amid vaccination slump

The ARS reported that transmission chains had been identified in the Grand Est region over several weeks. This included the detection of a case within a hospital in the Ardennes during April 2026.

In response to these findings, the ARS Grand Est urged residents to verify their vaccination status and called for increased vigilance among healthcare professionals to limit the propagation of the virus and protect vulnerable populations.

Public Health Context and Prevention

Measles remains one of the most contagious viral infections globally. Because the virus can lead to severe complications, health agencies maintain that high vaccination coverage is the only effective way to interrupt transmission and move toward the elimination of the disease.

Medical guidance emphasizes that vaccination is not only critical for children. Adults who have not been fully vaccinated or those who are unsure of their immunity are also encouraged to receive the vaccine to prevent potential complications.

The current situation in 2026 follows a period of significant volatility. In 2025, France saw a sharp increase in measles cases, with reports indicating 873 cases by the end of that year and at least four deaths recorded during that period.

Health officials continue to monitor epidemiological trends to detect clusters and implement control measures. The primary goal remains the maintenance of a high immunity threshold across the population to prevent the resurgence of larger outbreaks.
