Public Transport Challenges in Meath

Meath County faces significant commuting issues. Over 43,000 residents leave the county for work daily. These commuters have the longest average travel times in Ireland. According to the 2022 Census, many Meath workers spend over an hour commuting, with more than 17,000 people making daily trips of 60 minutes or longer.

A new rail line from Navan to Dublin is in the works. Iarnród Éireann recently hired consultants to assist with the project. Despite this progress, the rail line might not be completed until between 2030 and 2035. This timeline offers little relief for residents who are facing long commutes.

For those in the eastern part of Meath, issues with train fares persist. Councillor Sharon Tolan has been advocating for fairer fares in the region.

Bus services also contribute to commuting frustrations. The 103 bus, which serves communities like Ratoath and Ashbourne, has faced reliability problems and frequent cancellations. Meath East Fianna Fáil candidate Caroline O’Reilly recently surveyed commuters to document their experiences and present the findings to transport authorities.

Councillors from Meath expressed dissatisfaction after meeting with the National Transport Authority and Bus Éireann. They felt the meeting did not adequately address urgent transport concerns.

Aontú’s Emer Tóibín raised issues with the Navan bus service. Commuters report buses being late or not arriving at all, leading to overcrowding and a lack of adequate shelters.

Many commuters feel public transport is not a viable option and are forced to drive. This situation often results in high toll costs. Taoiseach Simon Harris acknowledged these concerns during a recent visit to Meath, emphasizing the need for a review of tolls.

School transport remains another major issue. Parents and students experience stress over the availability of bus services. Some parents face uncertainty regarding concessionary tickets, while others must travel significant distances to access bus stops.

These challenges highlight the urgent need for improved transport infrastructure and reliable services in County Meath.
