Medical School Admissions: Navigating Diversity After Affirmative Action Ruling
Updated June 19, 2025
Despite the Supreme Court’s decision against race-conscious admissions, medical school applicants still have
an avenue to emphasize their diverse backgrounds in personal essays, according to an expert. This provides a
limited possibility to promote diversity in medical education.
In 2023, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against affirmative action, specifically race-conscious college
admissions, in a 6-3 vote, according to Dr. billy Thomas, a professor of neonatology and pediatrics at the
university of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Thomas addressed the issue in the journal Annals of Family
Medicine.
“Based partially on the idea that enough time had elapsed for achievement of the stated goals of affirmative
action, the court ruled race-conscious admissions are unconstitutional under the 14th Amendment’s Equal
Protection Clause,” Thomas wrote.”The ruling left a crack in the door to higher education, however, allowing
students to write an essay showing how race or ethnicity affected their lives.”
Thomas spoke about how diversity improves medicine and how applicants can navigate admissions considering the
ruling.
Thomas: In the last decade it has been shown that the more diverse a group is, the better the
decision-making process and outcomes. You can extrapolate that to medicine and ask, “What is the best
habitat for everyone to learn?” Learning, teaching and personal and professional development are all
enhanced in a diverse educational environment.
Thomas added that diversity in medicine is a long process that starts in primary school, continues through
medical school and residency, and extends to patient care, ultimately improving individual and population
health and reducing health disparities.
Research indicates that health care providers who share common experiences with specific patient populations
improve health care access and patient involvement, leading to higher quality care and reduced health
disparities.Patients tend to trust and adhere to recommendations from health care providers with whom they
feel comfortable, which is enhanced by a diverse health care workforce.
Thomas noted the gap between the number of minorities enrolled in medical school (23.6%) and the minority
population in the United States (34.6%).He cited literature showing a correlation between health care
workforce diversity and patient outcomes.
what’s next
Medical schools are now tasked with finding new strategies to maintain and enhance diversity in their student
bodies, while adhering to the Supreme Court’s ruling. This may involve a greater emphasis on socioeconomic
factors and personal experiences in the admissions process.
