Oncology Nurses Reduce Medication Waste in Cancer Care, Saving Millions

A proactive approach involving oncology-trained nurses is substantially reducing medication waste and promoting better use of drugs in cancer care, according to new research. These nurses conduct thorough chart reviews and reassessments before medication refills are dispensed, preventing unnecessary prescriptions and saving millions of dollars.
The research highlights the critical role of medically integrated pharmacies (MIPs) in avoiding costs and reducing waste. By identifying discrepancies before medications are shipped, these pharmacies ensure that patients receive the most appropriate and necessary treatments.This intervention is especially significant in oncology, where oral therapies are increasingly common.
The National Institutes of Health estimated that suboptimal medication use cost the U.S. $418 billion in 2012. Data from a cost avoidance and waste tracker tool showed that MIPs achieved net cost avoidance of $6,510,971.28, compared to $546,082.45 for external mail-order pharmacies. Among 37 practices, 768 waste events were reported, totaling $11,275,642.16 in drug waste. External mail-order pharmacies accounted for $8,935,612.15 of this waste, while $2,429,592.01 was attributed to MIPs.
Nurses at American Oncology Network (AON) Pharmacy reviewed charts for all specialty oncology medications due for refill from February to September 2023. They accessed electronic medical records, reviewed notes, labs, scans, and appointments, and completed reassessment care plans. When discrepancies were found, shipments were held, and providers were notified.
During the study period,152 interventions were documented,resulting in $1.9 million in cost avoidance. This figure includes savings for patients with cancer and the health care industry. Reasons for holding shipments included dose changes,therapy holds,disease progression,therapy changes,and patients in hospice or deceased.
