Reps. Jimmy Gomez, D-Calif., and⁣ Don Beyer, D-Va., have introduced the Choose Medicare act, proposing a Medicare⁣ “part E.” This new option would allow both employers‍ and individuals to buy into Medicare, perhaps⁣ reshaping the healthcare landscape.

Companion legislation has been introduced in the senate by Sens. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., and Chris Murphy, D-Conn.The bill, also cosponsored by Reps. Jared Huffman, D-Calif., ‍LaMonica McIver, D-N.J., and Eleanor holmes Norton, D-D.C., ⁤seeks to build on the ⁣existing system by creating⁤ a ⁤self-funded⁣ Medicare option that ⁤competes with private insurers.

The Choose Medicare Act aims to make Medicare ⁤accessible through state and ⁢federal health insurance marketplaces. It ⁢would also allow individuals to use Affordable care Act subsidies to ⁤help with‍ payments. Employers⁤ of all sizes could ⁤choose Medicare coverage for their employees, without eliminating existing insurance plans. Proponents say this‍ increased ⁢competition could drive down private insurance premiums.

The ⁤proposed legislation mandates coverage of the ⁢10 essential health benefits outlined in the ACA, in addition to standard Medicare coverage.
