Medtronic’s LigaSure XP Maryland: Improved Performance for Faster, Safer Surgeries

by Catherine Williams - Chief Editor

Medtronic’s latest LigaSure XP Maryland offers improved performance characteristics, potentially reducing surgical risks and procedure times

The LigaSure™ XP Maryland Jaw Sealer/Divider, a recent addition to Medtronic’s LigaSure™ portfolio, has demonstrated improved performance characteristics when compared to LigaSure™ Atlas and LigaSure™ Dolphin Tip devices in ex vivo and in vivo testing. The XP Maryland, featuring 360° continuous jaw rotation, a unique Maryland-style design, and nanocoating, has consistently shown reliable results, further cementing the consistent and reliable performance associated with the LigaSure technology.

The study, conducted by Inotiv, compared the performance of the XP Maryland to the Atlas and Dolphin Tip. Key findings from the ex vivo bench and in vivo acute testing include:

  • Seal times: The XP Maryland achieved significantly faster mean seal times compared to both the Atlas and Dolphin Tip. It was 40% faster than the average seal time of the Dolphin Tip and 38% faster than the Atlas.

  • Thermal spread: The XP Maryland had significantly less lateral thermal spread than the Atlas during in vivo testing (P = 0.0010). It had a mean thermal spread of 1.29 ± 0.40 mm, compared to the Atlas’s 2.06 ± 0.61 mm.

  • Incomplete cuts and sticking: The XP Maryland had a significantly lower rate of incomplete cuts compared to the Dolphin Tip (P < 0.0001) and fewer sticking incidents compared to the Atlas (P = 0.0019).

  • Burst pressure: The mean burst pressure of the XP Maryland was 1082 ± 347 mmHg, compared to the Dolphin Tip’s 1065 ± 413 mmHg and the Atlas’s 1531 ± 450 mmHg.

  • Hemostasis: There was no statistical difference in the rate of hemostasis achieved between the XP Maryland and the other two devices.

The XP Maryland’s unique jaw design, characterized by long, narrow curved jaws, potentially facilitates reduced thermal spread, better fine dissection, and improved skeletonization of vessels. Its 360° continuous jaw rotation, combined with its Maryland-style design, may enhance procedural efficiency and potentially reduce surgical risks.

Dr. Mark Fox, senior medical director at Medtronic, highlighted that "as surgical techniques evolve and surgeons continue to pursue improved efficiencies, it is essential that surgical technologies keep pace. The improved performance characteristics demonstrated by the LigaSure XP Maryland may help surgeons achieve better outcomes for their patients while potentially reducing time in the operating room."
