Meet Beastro: The Game-Changing Robot Chef Revolutionizing Kitchens and Cooking Up a Storm at American University

November 3, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Business

Faced with a global labor shortage, the catering industry has turned to automated solutions to reduce workforce pressure. The fully automatic kitchen robot “Beastro” developed by Kitchen Robotics has officially entered Florida International University (FIU) in the United States and has become the “chef” of the school restaurant. This mechanical kitchen can cook up to 75 meals per hour, significantly reducing manpower requirements and providing a new dining experience for students. It may become an innovative trend that cannot be ignored in the catering industry in the future.

The high-tech robotic kitchen “Beastro” is specially designed for campus restaurants It can handle four different meals at once, and uses artificial intelligence (AI) technology to ensure the taste and portion of each dish constant Diners only need to click on the desired meal on the tablet menu, and the robot will automatically add the ingredients for cooking. It is understood that Beastro can use dozens of ingredients to complete a variety of cooking options and is not limited to specific foods, be it spaghetti, omelets or stir fry.

FIU Dining Manager Chris Valdes said Beastro has been very popular among students since its introduction, serving an average of about 179 meals a day, of which “spaghetti of your choice” is the most popular. Valdes noted that students are curious about how food is prepared in a mechanical kitchen, and the interactive dining experience has made the robot chef popular.

Ofer Zinger, CEO of Kitchen Robotics, pointed out that Beastro’s design was inspired by traditional scenes in home kitchens. He spoke of his grandmother’s experience preparing dinner based on the ingredients available in the kitchen cabinet, and noted that Beastro aims to support such an “improvisational cooking” model, allowing users to create menus based on preferences and existing ingredients. Zinger emphasized that Beastro does not rely on specific foods and provides flexible and innovative cooking methods to meet the needs of different tastes.

Beastro’s automation extends not only to the cooking process, but also to a high degree of automation in cleaning and sanitation. Each time a meal is completed, the robot will thoroughly clean the used pots This design greatly reduces labor costs. According to data from Kitchen Robotics, Beastro can reduce labor costs and unnecessary food waste by up to 75%, making catering business operations more cost-effective.

Kitchen Robotics currently leases Beastro to commercial customers at US$3,970 (about HK$30,966) per month, and expects to gradually enter other regions in the US East Coast, Canada, Germany and other markets in the future. This robot kitchen has successfully entered FIU after a trial at Bank of America in Florida, and another robot kitchen has also been used in a restaurant in Toronto, Canada, laying the foundation for the expansion of the future market.

Zinger said Kitchen Robotics’ technology has immediate scalability capabilities and emphasized that unlike other automated kitchen solutions that are only in the prototype or testing stage, Beastro has had many field trials and is fully qualified for commercial operation. The company has raised about US$10 million (about HK$78 million) in funding and plans to hold the next funding round in order to bring this technology to the global market.

With the gradual popularity of automated kitchens, the emergence of Beastro-type robot chefs will undoubtedly bring a new trend to the catering industry. After testing it themselves, FIU students also began to wonder whether the meals cooked by this robot can match the quality of traditional manual cooking, and whether consumers will pay for this new way of eating that has become next topic that deserves attention.
