Meet Hamza Uddin: The Aspiring First British-Bangladeshi World Boxing Champion
Hamza Uddin: Aspiring Boxing Champion
Hamza Uddin, a 21-year-old professional boxer, dreams of becoming the first British-Bangladeshi world champion. He trains hard and prepares for his upcoming fight against Benn Norman at the NEC in Birmingham.
Uddin started boxing at the age of two, influenced by his father, Siraj, who was also a boxer. He turned professional earlier this year under Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom team. Uddin emphasizes the importance of discipline and focus in his training.
He recalls his early days, saying, “There’s a video of me on my second birthday… I can barely walk but I’m punching the bags.” Despite achieving academic success and a spot at Wolverhampton University, he chose to pursue boxing full-time. “Every day I am boxing, I am achieving something new for my people,” he stated.
Uddin has a professional record of two wins, with one knockout. He hopes to inspire future generations by achieving his goal. “If I can do it, then maybe one day little kids can say Hamza Uddin has done it,” he expressed.
His journey is not without challenges. Uddin acknowledges that some people doubt his choice to box because of his background. He counters this doubt with pride, stating, “I’m proud to have my community behind me.”
In explaining his character, Uddin stated, “Some people say I would have been in jail if I wasn’t boxing, but I’m not no gangster.” He believes boxing can provide positive opportunities and a sense of community, emphasizing its role in addressing social issues.
Uddin’s next match is on the undercard of the Sunny Edwards vs. Galal Yafia flyweight bout. He is ready to showcase his skills and honor his community by striving for a championship title.
