Meet Sara Poulin: The Rising Star of Lewiston-Auburn’s Comedy Scene

Sara Poulin: Local Stand-Up Comic

Sara Poulin is a stand-up comic from the Lewiston-Auburn area. She engages in various activities, including hosting a podcast called Lydia’s Lunch Bunch and performing live music with her ukulele.

Comedy Journey

Sara’s interest in comedy started in childhood. She enjoyed shows like “I Love Lucy” and “The Carol Burnett Show” with her mother. These shows inspired her to make people laugh. In her teenage years, she admired stand-up comics like Janeane Garofalo and Paula Poundstone. Three years ago, Sara began her comedy career by taking a comedy writing class as part of her New Year’s resolutions.

Challenges in Stand-Up

Sara finds stand-up comedy challenging because it is a solo performance. Unlike singing or theater, she does not have other performers to rely on. She emphasizes the importance of authenticity in her jokes. Without authenticity, audiences can sense that something is off, making the performance less engaging. Continuous practice is essential for success in comedy, and Sara works hard to perfect her craft.

Joy in Comedy

The best part of comedy for Sara is the sound of laughter from the audience. She particularly values the laughs she receives from fellow comedians, as they can be the toughest audience to please.

Handling Hecklers

Hecklers can be a challenge. Although Sara has not faced hecklers directly, she believes ignoring them usually works. If other comics choose to engage, they can control the conversation effectively.

Personal Interests

Outside of comedy, Sara balances a full-time job, a college-aged child, and her podcast. She enjoys writing and performing music and loves spending time outdoors, especially in summer by the water and in spring and fall in the woods.
