Meet the Feathered Fury: UK Welcomes the World’s Most Fearsome Bird, the Cassowary, in a Rare and Thrilling Hatch
Cassowary Chick Hatches Successfully in the UK for the First Time
A cassowary chick has hatched at Birdland in Gloucestershire, England, marking a significant milestone in the conservation of this endangered species.
According to reports, the chick hatched on the 8th after 25 years of efforts by the Birdland team. This is the first time a cassowary has hatched in the UK since 2021.
“Meeting this little cub for the first time was a very special moment,” said Birdland Zookeeper Alistair Keane.
The cassowary is a protected species that was designated as endangered in 1992. There are approximately 4,000 cassowaries left in the wild, and they are mainly found in the tropical rainforests of New Guinea and northern Australia.
These birds are known for their unique characteristics, including their red neck skin, which gives them their name. They are also fast runners, reaching speeds of up to 50 km/h, and are good swimmers.
However, cassowaries are also known for their aggressive behavior when threatened, and their 10 cm long dagger-like claws can cause serious injury with just one kick.
In fact, there have been several cases of human deaths due to cassowary attacks, highlighting the importance of handling these birds with care and caution.
The parents of the newly hatched chick were part of the European Endangered Species Conservation Programme and were sent to Birdland in 2012. The male came from Avifauna Bird Park in the Netherlands, while the female came from Frankfurt, Germany.
