Megan Fairchild Retires Final Acts and Coppélia Performances

Megan Fairchild, a Principal Dancer with the New York City Ballet, will perform her final stage appearance on May 24, 2026. The upcoming performance marks the conclusion of a 25-year career with the company.

For her final bow, Fairchild has chosen to dance the role of Swanilda in the ballet Coppélia. The character, described as a sassy and high-spirited young woman, is central to the production choreographed by George Balanchine and Alexandra Danilova.

Fairchild indicated that the choice of the ballet was influenced by its comedic nature and its personal significance. She noted that the production offers a rare opportunity for levity on stage.

A Career-Defining Moment in Saratoga Springs

The selection of Coppélia is deeply rooted in a pivotal moment from the early stages of Fairchild’s career. In 2003, while performing as a 19-year-old Soloist, she was called upon to dance the role of Swanilda during the company’s season in Saratoga Springs.

The opportunity arose following a series of injuries within the company during that season. Fairchild ultimately performed the role in all four scheduled appearances, which included two performances on a single day.

Reflecting on the challenges of that period, Fairchild recalled her initial uncertainty regarding the demanding schedule.
