India has formally submitted a nomination dossier to UNESCO seeking ⁢World Heritage status for the unique living root bridges of Meghalaya, a region in Northeast India.The nomination,titled “Jingkieng Jri / Lyu Chrai Cultural Landscape,” is under consideration for the 2026-27 evaluation cycle.

Nomination Details and Submission

The dossier was⁢ presented by India’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to UNESCO, Vishal V. Sharma,to Lazare Assomo Eloundou,Director of UNESCO’s ‍world Heritage center,on January 30,2026. UNESCO World Heritage Centre provides facts on the World Heritage Convention and its processes.

The Jingkieng Jri / Lyu Chrai Cultural Landscape

The nominated‍ landscape encompasses areas within the Khasi‍ and Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya. It represents a centuries-old tradition of bioengineering practiced by the indigenous Khasi and Jaintia communities. These communities have cultivated living bridges from the aerial roots of the Ficus elastica rubber tree,creating lasting⁤ infrastructure that harmonizes with the natural surroundings. Meghalaya tourism details the region’s unique cultural ⁤and natural attractions.

Indigenous Knowledge and Ecological Stewardship

The living ⁤root bridges are deeply intertwined with the indigenous belief system ⁤centered around Mei Ramew, or Mother⁤ Earth, and reflect a profound respect for nature.
