The Weight of criticism
Meghan Markle, the Duchess of sussex, has become accustomed to intense public scrutiny, navigating it with a resilience that has often been on display. However, a particularly pointed critique reportedly struck a deeper chord, landing with important force because of the source: Tina brown, a figure Markle herself evidently held in high regard.
Brown, a veteran of the publishing world as the former editor of both Vanity Fair and Tatler, delivered a scathing assessment of Markle’s judgment. according to royal commentator Neil Sean, this critique left the Duchess “inconsolable with tears and at the same time outraged.”
A Legacy of Diana Insight
Brown’s viewpoint carries weight, stemming from a unique position within the British royal narrative. She enjoyed a close relationship with Princess Diana, even sharing lunch with her just weeks before her untimely death in 1997. This connection informed her bestselling biography, The Diana Chronicles, a work it is believed Markle consulted to gain a deeper understanding of her husband, Prince Harry’s, past.
In October of the previous year, Brown expanded on her views during an appearance on The Ankler podcast with Janice Min. She stated unequivocally,”The trouble with Meghan is that she has the worst judgment of anyone in the entire world.”
Harry’s Path and Meghan’s Influence
Brown’s assessment extended to Prince Harry, suggesting his departure from royal life was almost inevitable. She described him as “very impetuous” and noted that many within the Palace anticipated his eventual exit, viewing him as “so fragile, so combustible, and frankly, unhappy” within the constraints of royal duty.
She posited that Harry was deeply impressed by Markle, believing she possessed a unique understanding of navigating the world of celebrity and influence. Brown alleged that he “blindly followed her like a child, really,” trusting her to elevate their status and create a new path.
A Prince’s Aptitude and a Troubled Course
Despite her criticisms, Brown acknowledged Harry’s natural aptitude for his royal role. “The thing about Harry is he’s very good at being Prince Harry,” she stated. “And that’s the tragedy of all of this; he is the moast talented member of the royal family, without doubt, in terms of being a prince, which is all he does know how to do. He’s really sort of flawless at it.”
This isn’t the first time Brown has publicly shared her opinions on the couple. In 2022, she expressed skepticism that Princess Diana would have supported their decision to step back as senior royals, believing Diana remained a staunch supporter of the monarchy.
Diana’s Potential Disapproval
Brown suggested that Diana would have been fiercely protective of Harry and deeply concerned by the direction he and Markle were taking.”Diana would have been very, very protective of Harry and I believe very anxious about this direction they [he and Meghan] have taken,” she revealed to the Daily Beast. She further speculated that Diana might not have approved of Markle, believing she was leading Harry down an unfavorable path, stating, “I don’t think Diana would have been the great fan of Meghan that Meghan herself might perhaps imagine.”
