After a dominant performance at the Leadville Stage race, Rollins has proven she’s capable of conquering the challenging high-altitude terrain, but faces stiff competition from a field packed with seasoned mountain bike professionals.
Building Momentum: A Win at the Leadville Stage Race
Rollins’ preparation for the iconic 100-mile race included a strategic start at the leadville Stage race in late July. This wasn’t a casual warm-up; it was a deliberate conditioning effort designed to acclimate to the punishing altitude. and it paid off. Rollins secured a decisive victory, finishing 22 seconds ahead of mountain biking star Kate Courtney, and a full minute faster than Sofia Gomez Villafañe and Lauren Stephens – all of whom will be vying for the top spot this Saturday.
“I definitely feel a lot of stress coming into this race, probably more than I ever have, and maybe more than I expected,” Rollins admitted. “I’m just happy to have proven that I’m capable of doing it again by how the stage race went.”
This victory isn’t just about physical prowess. It’s a mental boost, solidifying Rollins’ confidence as she faces the pressure of being a favorite. The Stage Race win demonstrates a refined strategy and the ability to perform under pressure, crucial elements for success in a race as demanding as Leadville.
A New Setup, A New Feeling: drop Bars and Confidence
This year, Rollins is riding for Liv Racing Collective, bringing a fresh dynamic to her racing approach. A important change has been her bike setup. initially unsure, Rollins ultimately opted for drop bars, a suggestion from fellow racer Keegan swenson.
“I had two setups ready to go. I had my mountain bike with flat bars, and I had actually a newly set up drop bar bike as I hadn’t completely dialled in the fit. Keegan will laugh, as he told me at the beginning of the year to do this setup, I’d probably need to size down a frame. And I didn’t,” she explained with a laugh.
Her initial concern revolved around descending the technical Powerline section, but those fears proved unfounded. “I was a little bit scared that I would get dropped on powerline going down, and that was my only apprehension to running the drop bar setup. But I’m actually exactly the same speed, if not faster, on every descent with drop bars. To be honest, the drop bars are freaking fun. It’s like new bike day all over again.”
Rollins believes the drop bars offer a unique advantage, allowing her to experiment and optimize her position for both climbing and descending. “I’m super happy with my setup. I think it’s amazing. I don’t know that the bars matter that much, but I think this race gives a very unique opportunity to try out a setup. I’m really excited to be able to do that, especially after not really ever looking into it last year.”
The Competition and the Life Time Grand Prix Standings
Rollins isn’t the only threat on the course.Sofia Gomez Villafañe, a two-time Life Time Grand Prix overall winner, is a formidable competitor. She currently shares the women’s Grand Prix standings with cecily Decker, both having excelled at Unbound Gravel events.
