Rep. Melissa Hortman’s Death Shakes Minnesota Politics
Minnesota’s political scene is reeling from the death of Rep.Melissa Hortman, DFL-Brooklyn Park. Her passing marks a significant shift after a period where her party enjoyed considerable success, followed by the Democrats’ election setbacks in 2024.
Following the loss of the House and a weeks-long boycott of the 2025 legislative session, Hortman entered into a power-sharing agreement. This resulted in her handing the speaker’s gavel to Republican Lisa Demuth of Cold spring.
Demuth released a statement Saturday expressing her devastation at the news of Hortman’s death. She noted that despite their fierce political battles, their “personal bond” remained strong.
“We worked together for the last several years to build a strong relationship based on our shared values and our commitment to making our state better,” Demuth said.
The 2025 legislative session concluded amid deep divisions and a looming budget deficit. Hortman’s agreement to a state budget provision, which removed newly acquired health care benefits from undocumented adult immigrants, ignited controversy within the DFL’s liberal wing. This decision highlighted the complex role Hortman played in navigating difficult political terrain.
Rep. María Isa Pérez-Vega, DFL-St.Paul, said the vote caused turmoil among her colleagues. She recalled Hortman’s support and outreach in the difficult aftermath of the budget deal announcement.
What’s next
The state now faces uncertainty as it navigates the upcoming legislative period without Hortman’s experience and influence. Her ability to bridge divides and negotiate compromises will be sorely missed as Minnesota grapples with ongoing budget challenges and political polarization.
