Meloni and Milei Strengthen Ties in Rome
Italian PM Meloni Welcomes Argentine President Milei, Eyes Stronger ties
Rome, Italy – Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni welcomed Argentine President Javier Milei to Rome on Friday, December 13th, aiming to bolster bilateral relations between the two nations. The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation in areas such as judicial matters, trade, and combating organized crime.
Meloni and Milei met at the Palazzo Chigi, the seat of the Italian government, where they were greeted by the sounds of their respective national anthems despite a heavy downpour. the hour-long meeting saw Meloni express Italy’s desire to increase its economic and commercial presence in Argentina, especially in energy and high-value-added sectors.
Both leaders agreed on the importance of judicial cooperation and security, with a specific emphasis on tackling international organized crime.
“We had the opportunity to reaffirm our common will to further strengthen the already solid bilateral association, with the aim of concluding in the coming months a plan of action for 2025-2030,” a statement from Meloni’s office read. “This will allow us to deepen the already wide areas of cooperation between the two nations.”
Milei’s visit to Italy marks his first official trip abroad since assuming office in argentina a year ago. Earlier in the day, he received the International Milton Friedman Prize for 2024 and used the platform to reiterate his commitment to shrinking the state.
“I despise the state, and I am within the state to break it, destroy it, and reduce it,” Milei declared. He highlighted Argentina’s progress under his leadership, stating, ”We went from being a country almost unpresentable to the world to being more or less halfway there, although there are still 3,500 reforms to go.”
Milei’s aspiring vision for Argentina includes transforming it into a global powerhouse. “I will make sure that Argentina becomes great again and turns into a powerhouse,” he asserted. “I will transform Argentina into one of the freest countries in the world, following the example of Ireland, which in 30 years became one of the richest countries in the world, with a GDP per capita 50% higher than that of the United States.”
Following his meeting with Meloni, Milei met with Jakob Stausholm, CEO of the British-Australian multinational Rio Tinto, which recently announced a $2.5 billion investment in Argentina to expand a lithium project.
On Saturday, Milei is scheduled to participate in an event organized by Fratelli d’Italia, Meloni’s far-right party. He will also meet with John Elkann, the head of automaker Stellantis, before returning to Argentina on Monday.
milei’s Italian citizenship, granted due to his ancestral roots, has sparked controversy in Italy. Some politicians and social media users have criticized the decision, arguing that it is easier for individuals with Italian ancestry to obtain citizenship than for children of immigrants born in Italy.
