Melvin Council Jr. is returning to the Kansas basketball program for the upcoming 2026-27 season after securing a preliminary injunction in a New York court, according to Topeka Capital-Journal reporting. The senior guard, who earned Big 12 Newcomer of the Year honors last season after transferring from St. Bonaventure, will begin practicing immediately in Lawrence alongside teammate Tre White.
Melvin Council Jr. Rejoining Kansas Back Court
Kansas coach Bill Self announced the return of Council in a statement shared on social media by the university athletic department. Melvin was the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year last season, and had a major impact on our program both on and off the court,
Self said in the statement provided by Topeka Capital-Journal. He brings a lot of experience and leadership to our roster, and we are excited to welcome him back.
Council started all 35 games he played for the Jayhawks last season, averaging 12.7 points, 5.1 assists, and 5.0 rebounds per contest while helping lead the team to the Big 12 tournament semifinals and the round of 32 in the NCAA tournament.
Legal Injunction Clears Senior Guard to Play
Council gained eligibility for the upcoming campaign by securing a preliminary injunction through a court case in the state of New York. Although that legal proceeding remains ongoing, the ruling allows the senior guard to rejoin the program immediately. He follows a similar path as teammate Tre White, an athlete from the previous season’s roster who recently received a preliminary injunction through an Indiana court case to be eligible for the new season.
Building Chemistry With a New-Look Jayhawks Roster
With Council and White both back on the floor, the immediate priority in Lawrence shifts toward integrating the returning talent into a heavily revamped team. Council enters his final collegiate season tasked with establishing on-court chemistry alongside a largely new roster of players. Both sides reached an agreement on his return after discussions between the coaching staff and the player regarding the factors involved in his potential comeback.
