Scottie Scheffler,the world’s top-ranked golfer,propelled himself to the top of the leaderboard at the Memorial Tournament in Columbus,Ohio,with a remarkable 4-under 68 on Saturday. His performance put him one stroke ahead of fellow American Ben Griffin.
Scheffler, 28, is aiming for his third win in the last four tournaments. He played a bogey-free round,maintaining par through the first 13 holes before finishing strong with birdies on the 14th,15th,17th,adn 18th holes. This surge put him at 8-under overall.
Griffin, who led Scheffler by three strokes entering the day, carded an even-par 72, with five birdies and five bogeys. Nick Taylor of Canada is three shots behind the lead after a 2-over 74. Ireland’s shane lowry is tied for seventh after shooting a 1-over 73.
“I was definitely proud of the way I finished, and it was really challenging,” Scheffler said. “Around this golf course, even par, I think, today would have been a pretty solid score.”
Scheffler added that he felt he could have scored even better, noting that a few near misses slightly impacted his score.
Taylor acknowledged the challenge of competing against Scheffler.”I’ll be trying to chase him down,” Taylor said. ”He’s obviously playing phenomenal, so I’ll have to play some of my best golf to be in the hunt there with the last few holes to go.”
