Cuban Mother Alleges Medical negligence Led to Son’s Death
A Cuban mother has taken to social media to publicly denounce what she alleges was medical negligence in the death of her son at the Santa Clara Children’s Hospital. The woman, Lucía Yera, claims that doctors dismissed her son’s serious symptoms as a common cold, when he was, actually, suffering from fulminating meningoencephalitis, a risky inflammation of the brain and its surrounding membranes.
Mother Recounts Repeated Dismissals
yera said she repeatedly brought her son to the hospital, but was sent home each time, despite his worsening condition. Symptoms included a high fever, dehydration, and overall physical deterioration.
“Every time thay sent him to the hospital, they said he was a cold, that the fever was for a scabies,” Yera wrote in her social media post. “They never made a lumbar puncture. They only sent me home.”
Delayed Diagnosis, Devastating outcome
According to Yera, a doctor did not examine her son until 8:30 a.m. the following day, at which point he was already in critical condition. A lumbar puncture was then performed, confirming the diagnosis of meningoencephalitis.
“It was too late,” Yera stated. “My child endured 14 heart strikes because I wanted to live. No doctor had the right to take his life as they did.”
Broader Concerns About Cuban Healthcare
Yera also criticized the lack of medicine and the overall state of the Cuban healthcare system, saying that families frequently enough have to find and purchase medications on the black market.
“I woudl like to let off steam and be sincere about what is happening in this country, where nothing happens to the doctors who are doing all is to kill everyone,” she wrote. “thousands of children and elderly die daily and nothing happens. They took my child and I can no longer get pregnant. Who calms my pain while they laugh?”
Her complaint comes amid growing concerns and testimonies questioning the transparency and effectiveness of the Cuban health system.
Exiled Doctor Alleges Data Manipulation
alexander Jesús Figueredo Izaguirre, an exiled Cuban doctor, has repeatedly made similar accusations, alleging that the Cuban government manipulates infant mortality figures for propaganda purposes.
“The problem is the criminal system that turned public health into an altar of lies,” Figueredo said on social media, claiming to have documented evidence that he intends to present before international courts.
Mother Urges Others to Speak Out
Yera concluded her post by urging others who have been affected by similar situations to speak out.
”Please, when somthing happens to them, they are not silent,” she wrote. “They are shameless. They will not complain that nothing will happen. Take justice for their own hands if necessary. No one will return me to my child.”
As of today, authorities in Villa Clara and the Ministry of Public Health have not issued an official statement regarding the case.
