Men’s Breast Cancer: Symptoms and Risk Factors
Men Can Get Breast Cancer: Understanding Symptoms and Types

While often associated with women, men also possess breast tissue and, though rare, can develop breast cancer. According to Dr. Feyona Heliani Subrata, a General Surgeon Specialist at Eka Hospital Depok, male breast cancer accounts for less than 1 percent of all breast cancer cases.
Symptoms of Breast Cancer in Men
Dr. Feyona, speaking on October 30, 2024, in Tangerang, stated that the most common symptom is a hard lump under the nipple as reported by Antara.
Though, not all lumps indicate cancer. They can be either benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous) tumors.
Benign vs. Malignant Breast Tumors
Breast tumors are characterized by abnormal cell growth forming masses within breast tissue. The key difference lies in the nature of these cells.
Benign Tumors
Benign tumors exhibit limited growth, with cells closely resembling normal cells. They typically have well-defined boundaries and move freely within surrounding tissue. Crucially, benign tumors do not spread to other organs and are not life-threatening.
Malignant Tumors (Cancer)
Malignant tumors, or cancer, grow aggressively and uncontrollably. They often feel hard, have indistinct boundaries, and adhere tightly to surrounding tissue.
The most risky characteristic of malignant tumors is their potential to metastasize – to spread to lymph nodes, lungs, or bones as explained by Dr. Feyona Heliani Subrata.
