From Falcons to Tigers: RIT Hockey staff Boasts Bowling green Roots
Rochester, NY – The RIT Tigers men’s ice hockey program boasts a coaching staff with deep ties to a powerhouse program hundreds of miles away: Bowling Green State University.Head Coach Wayne Wilson, Associate Head coach Brian Hills, and Director of Player Development Buddy Powers all spent significant time with the Falcons, forging a connection that continues to shape their coaching philosophies today.
Wilson, now in his 26th season behind the RIT bench, began his collegiate career wearing the orange and brown of Bowling Green. As a player, he captained the Falcons to a national championship in 1984, a feat made even more remarkable by the fact that the title game was played in Lake Placid, New York, on the same ice where the U.S. Olympic team achieved the “Miracle on Ice” four years earlier.Wilson’s crucial assist on the game-tying goal in the quadruple-overtime thriller cemented his place in Bowling Green hockey history.
“That championship run was something truly special,” Wilson recalls. ”The experience of playing for Coach York and alongside such talented teammates instilled in me a deep understanding of what it takes to build a winning program.”
Wilson’s dedication to the Falcons didn’t end with his playing days. He returned to Bowling Green as an assistant coach, guiding the team to three NCAA Tournament appearances.
Joining Wilson on the RIT bench is Associate Head Coach Brian Hills,a Bowling Green legend in his own right. Hills graduated in 1983 as the program’s all-time leading scorer and goal scorer, racking up an impressive 270 points and 116 goals during his collegiate career. His senior year saw him shatter the program record with 94 points, earning him First-Team All-American honors and a Hobey Baker Award finalist nod for the second consecutive season.
Hills’ impact on the Falcons program extends beyond the stat sheet. He was inducted into the BGSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1988, a testament to his lasting legacy.
Rounding out the trio is Buddy Powers, who served as an assistant coach at Bowling Green from 1982-1988 before taking the helm as head coach from 1994-2002. Powers’ connection to RIT runs deep as well. He spent a season as head coach of the Tigers in 1988-89, leading them to a 26-8-2 record and a runner-up finish in the NCAA Division III national championship.
Powers currently serves as the Falcons’ Director of Player Development, continuing his dedication to the program that shaped his coaching career.
The shared experience of these three coaches at Bowling Green has undoubtedly influenced their approach to coaching at RIT. Their commitment to excellence, their understanding of the game, and their passion for developing young athletes are all hallmarks of the Bowling Green tradition, now carried forward with pride in Rochester.
