Carlex Design has unveiled a highly customized Mercedes-AMG G63, described as a rolling work of art, following a development process that spanned four years and involved millions of dollars in investment.
The project, specifically the Steampunk Edition, represents a shift away from mass production and the use of artificial plastics, focusing instead on the application of natural materials and traditional craftsmanship.
Design Philosophy and Materiality
The Steampunk Edition is inspired by the Victorian era and the technical revolutions depicted in the works of Mark Twain, Herbert George Wells and Jules Verne. The design objective was to transform the luxury SUV into a masterpiece where machinery is treated as art.
A central feature of the vehicle is the copper roof cover. This component was produced by copper processing experts and features a gigantic relief with steampunk motifs engraved by designers and jewellers.
The interior follows a specific color and material palette designed to highlight metallic accents:
- Hand-ornamented leather in a criollo hue.
- Components plated in rose gold or copper.
- A headliner featuring Alcantara® with large-scale embroidery of steampunk motifs.
The headliner’s embroidery is designed so that the motif color matches the Alcantara®, making the imagery subtle and dependent on the viewing angle.
Manufacturing and Authentication
The vehicle emphasizes hand-crafted techniques over modern automated processes. Carlex Design notes that while modern manufacturing relies on 3D printers and milling machines, this project utilized tools such as files and etching needles, reminiscent of traditional jewellers and shoemakers.

To ensure the value and provenance of the vehicle, each car in this series is issued a unique serial number. This is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the founder of Carlex, Damian Skotnicki.
Broader Portfolio Context
The Steampunk Edition is part of a broader strategy by Carlex Design to reimagine the Mercedes-AMG G63. Other projects include the Havana Vintage, which also positions the G63 as a rolling work of art.
These projects target the ultra-luxury bespoke market, where the value is derived from the exclusivity of the “one of one” manufacturing approach and the extensive labor hours required for completion.
