Three Killed, Several Injured in Mersin, Turkey Pedestrian Crash

At least three people have died and three others were injured after a car struck a group of pedestrians in Mersin, Türkiye, on February 2, 2026, at approximately 8:45 PM local time. The incident occurred at the Bekirde Kavşağı intersection on Gazi Mustafa Kemal Bulvarı in the Akdeniz district, according to reports.

The crash involved a vehicle attempting to overtake another on the highway when the driver lost control and veered onto the sidewalk, hitting pedestrians waiting to cross at a pedestrian crossing. Authorities stated the vehicle was attempting to pass a truck.

Emergency services, including police, health personnel, and firefighters, were dispatched to the scene. Paramedics confirmed the deaths of two individuals at the scene. A third victim died later in hospital despite medical intervention. Three injured individuals are currently receiving treatment in hospitals.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as M.K. (25), has been taken into custody, and an investigation is underway.

Victims Identified

The individuals who died at the scene have been identified as Zehra Serdil Atak (18) and Kübra Güney (15). Büşra Güney (15) died after being transported to a hospital. The injured have been identified as Burkan Acar (21), Yunus Bagi (35), and Necla Öztürk (15), and are receiving ongoing medical care.

Mersin Governor Atilla Toros and Provincial Police Chief İdris Yılmaz visited the scene to gather information from officials. Governor Toros stated, “We received a report of a traffic accident at the Bekirde Kavşağı in our Akdeniz district. Our teams were dispatched immediately. The accident occurred when a vehicle attempting to overtake a truck lost control and struck citizens on the median. Two citizens died at the scene, one died in the hospital, and three citizens are being treated in our hospitals.”

Initial reports indicate the car, while attempting to overtake another vehicle, lost control and struck the pedestrians. Traffic flow in the area was temporarily managed while authorities investigated the scene.

Mersin Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Vahap Seçer expressed his condolences on social media, stating, “I offer my condolences to the families of our citizens who lost their lives in the accident in our Akdeniz district, where a vehicle hit pedestrians at a pedestrian crossing, and wish a speedy recovery to the injured. Let’s all abide by traffic rules for our own safety and the safety of others, and let’s not allow more pain to happen.”

The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
