Mertens Claims Libema Open Title, Extends Winning Role

Elise Mertens, the No. 3 seed from Belgium, showcased her tennis role at the Libema Open in ’s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands, defeating Elena-Gabriela Ruse 6-3, 7-6 (4). The victory on Sunday marks her second WTA Tour title this year, adding to her triumph at the Singapore Tennis Open in Febuary.
Mertens now holds 10 WTA singles titles, achieving her first on grass. She previously won the Wimbledon women’s doubles title in 2021. her head-to-head record against Ruse extends to 4-0.
Ruse, a Romanian qualifier, initially pressured Mertens, leading 3-1 in the first set. However, Mertens recovered, saving two break points in the fifth game, shifting the momentum. after Ruse double-faulted twice, Mertens leveled the set at 3-3 and than won three consecutive games to secure the opener. Ruse took a medical timeout between sets for a thigh issue.
The second set saw both players trading breaks. ruse earned two set points at 5-4, but Mertens held serve, forcing a tiebreaker. Mertens then dominated the tiebreaker to clinch the championship.
“It’s been an amazing week,” Mertens said. “I mean yesterday I had 11 match points against me. I managed to still win that match.It’s tennis, anything can happen.So I’m very proud that I took that chance yesterday and today.”
Ruse acknowledged Mertens’ dominance in their matchups. Despite committing seven double faults, Ruse expressed pride in reaching the final, exceeding her expectations for the tournament.
“First of all, I would like to congratulate Elise. You beat me every time,so what can I say,” Ruse said. “I’m really sad and angry, but I will try next time. … I’m very proud of myself. I didn’t expect to be in the final here. It’s such a nice tournament.”
