Egypt has deployed fighter jets to the United Arab Emirates for the first time in the history of the two nations’ bilateral relations to assist in defensive operations against Iranian drones and missiles. The military deployment is intended to strengthen the air defenses of the United Arab Emirates against aerial threats originating from Iran.

The deployment consists of Rafale F3R fighter jets from the Egyptian Air Force. These aircraft are utilized for interception operations and are integrated into a synergistic air defense system designed to repel projectiles and suicide drones within the border regions of the United Arab Emirates.

The announcement of the military move coincided with a visit by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi to Abu Dhabi on May 11, 2026. During the visit, President Al-Sisi met with United Arab Emirates President Mohamed bin Zayed to review the operational readiness of the Egyptian jet detachment.

The two leaders personally inspected the detachment of Egyptian aircraft at a local military base. President Al-Sisi met with several pilots who have been tasked with maintaining the security of the Emirati airspace during the ongoing regional conflict.

Diplomatic and Strategic Solidarity

President Al-Sisi stated that Cairo stands in “full solidarity” with the United Arab Emirates. He expressed opposition to what he described as Iranian aggression against the sovereignty of the United Arab Emirates.

Whatever affects the United Arab Emirates, affects Egypt.

The deployment is regarded as a significant military signal due to the history of the relationship between Cairo and Abu Dhabi. The two capitals have frequently held opposing views on various regional disputes, making the decision to deploy combat aircraft a notable shift in military cooperation.

Despite previous political differences, the United Arab Emirates remains the largest foreign investor in the Egyptian economy. This economic interdependence continues to play a central role in the strategic partnership between the two countries.

Egyptian Air Force Capabilities

The Egyptian Air Force operates a diverse fleet of aircraft, which allows for a variety of operational roles. This fleet includes American-made F-16s, Russian-made MiG-29s, and French-made Rafale jets.

The Rafale F3R aircraft deployed to the United Arab Emirates are specifically noted for their advanced radar technology, which is critical for the detection and interception of unmanned aerial vehicles and cruise missiles.

The mission includes the deployment of experienced pilots from the Egyptian Air Force to lead interception operations. These personnel are working alongside Emirati forces to coordinate the defense of the region’s airspace.

Regional Security Context

The deployment follows recent aerial attacks that the United Arab Emirates has attributed to Iran. The government in Tehran has denied these accusations.

The primary objective of the Egyptian detachment is to ensure the protection of the sovereignty of the United Arab Emirates from external aerial attacks. This includes the active interception of drones and missiles before they can reach their targets.

While the deployment of the Rafale F3R fleet has been confirmed, the governments of Egypt and the United Arab Emirates have not disclosed the exact location of the aircraft or the specific base where they are stationed.
