A handwritten message, sealed in a wine bottle and cast into the Atlantic Ocean over a decade ago,has finally reached its intended recipients, delivering a heartwarming tale of enduring love. The bottle, launched during a romantic date in Newfoundland, Canada, in September 2012, recently washed ashore on the rugged coastline of Co Kerry, Ireland, after an astonishing 13-year journey.
A Decade Adrift: The Bottle’s Epic Voyage
the message in a bottle embarked on its transatlantic adventure from Bell Island, Newfoundland, penned by a couple named Anita and Brad during a memorable day trip. Their simple note, dated September 14, 2012, read: “Antia and Brad day trip to Bell Island today, we enjoyed dinner, this bottle of wine and each other, at the edge of the island.” Alongside their sweet sentiment, they included a plea: “please call us” with a phone number, hoping for a connection across the vast ocean.
Over the next 4,680 days, the bottle traversed over 3,000 kilometers, silently witnessing meaningful world events. From Barack Obama completing his presidency to the rise and fall of the Trump management, a global pandemic, and the subsequent return of Donald Trump to office, the bottle remained adrift, a tiny vessel carrying a hopeful message.
Discovery on the Shores of Kerry
The bottle’s journey came to an end thanks to a coastal clean-up effort in Scraggane Bay, in the Magharees peninsula of Co Kerry. Kate and John Gay, along with members of the Creative Ireland Project Maharees Heritage and Conservation group, unearthed the bottle during their volunteer work.”We were holding our breath for a happy ending to this love story,” said Kate Gay, reflecting the group’s anticipation as they carefully uncorked the bottle and read the faded message. Their immediate questions were simple, yet profound: where were Anita and Brad now, and were they still together?
Initial attempts to contact the couple proved unsuccessful, with the provided number ringing out repeatedly. the group turned to social media, posting a plea on their Facebook page, hoping someone might recognize Anita or Brad.
Their call was answered late that night when Anita, who has family connections to Co Mayo, Ireland, reached out. The news was joyous: Anita and Brad were still together, and thriving. They had married in 2016 and continue to live happily in Newfoundland.
A Testament to Enduring Love
Martha Farrell of the Maharees Conservation Association described the story as “tremendous,” and it quickly went viral on their Facebook page, capturing the hearts of peopel around the world. The discovery has even inspired others in Newfoundland to share their own stories of sending messages in bottles into the Atlantic, creating a ripple effect of hope and connection.
This remarkable tale serves as a poignant reminder of the power of simple gestures and the enduring nature of love, proving that even across vast distances and the passage of time, a message in a bottle can deliver a truly unforgettable story.
