Updated May 29, 2025
Fort Lauderdale, Fla. — Lionel Messi delivered a stellar performance Wednesday night, scoring two goals and providing an assist as Inter Miami snapped out of its recent struggles with a 4-2 victory over Montreal. The win marks only the second in the last eight matches for Inter Miami, who had slipped to sixth place in the Eastern Conference standings.
Messi’s goals came in the 27th and 87th minutes, showcasing his continued impact on the team’s attack. He also set up Luis Suárez for a goal in the 68th minute with skillful dribbling. Suárez added another goal in the 71st minute, contributing considerably to the team’s offensive surge.
Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano emphasized the importance of analyzing the game beyond just the result. “Sometimes you have to analyze not just the result, you have to analyze the game, how we play,” Mascherano said. ”I think in some games we didn’t get the result that we wanted. We deserved it a little bit more, but in (soccer), you don’t deserve, you have to do.”
Messi’s first goal was facilitated by Sergio Busquets, his former Barcelona teammate, who provided the pass and set a screen. Messi then connected with suárez, extending Miami’s lead. Suárez’s second goal was assisted by Messi late in the match.
The two goals were a welcome boost for Suárez, who had finished last season near the top of the MLS scoring charts but had only two goals entering Wednesday’s game. The offensive output was timely for Miami as they prepare for Club World Cup play.
Miami faces Columbus at home on Saturday before their first Club World Cup contest against Al Ahly of Egypt on June 14.
However, the team may be without several defenders for Saturday’s match. Jordi Alba sustained a lower-body injury in the first half, and Gonzalo Luján and Toto Aviles also left the game with lower-body injuries. Mascherano indicated that further evaluation is needed to determine the severity of Alba’s injury.
Despite the victory, Mascherano expressed dissatisfaction with the two late goals conceded to Montreal by Dante Sealy and Victor Loturi. “That is something that is unacceptable,” he said, “that we have to improve.”
