EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.— Palmeiras and porto played to a scoreless draw sunday in their Club World Cup Group A match at MetLife stadium. The result came despite an attack-focused game from Palmeiras.
The match was the first of several in the group stage pitting South american and European teams against each other. These games offer the best chance for South American teams to score an upset against their European counterparts. While European teams are often considered the strongest, South America has historically been the most likely to challenge them.
Palmeiras outshot Porto 17-11 and posted 2.22 expected goals to Porto’s 0.84. Estevao, the 18-year-old soon headed to Chelsea, took three shots and generated 0.89 expected goals.
Though, none of those chances resulted in a goal for the Brazilian side.
“I think we lacked efficiency for finalizing our plays, especially at the end of the game,” Estevao said after the match.”What wins matches are goals.”
The scoreless result was the only thing missing from a game with a combined 28 shots.Palmeiras came to the Club World Cup with notable talent, and Estevao took home player of the match honors.

Both teams will look to improve their efficiency in front of goal as the Club World Cup group stage continues.
