Meta acquired Assured Robot Intelligence (ARI) on May 1, 2026, as part of an expanded effort to develop the artificial intelligence required for humanoid robots.
The acquisition of the San Diego-based startup was confirmed by ARI cofounder Xiaolong Wang in a post on X on May 1, 2026. Meta and AIX Ventures, the first institutional investor to commit to the company upon its founding in May 2025, also confirmed the transaction to Business Insider.
ARI is a small-scale operation consisting of about 20 employees. The startup focuses on the intelligence layer of robotics, creating AI models that allow humanoid machines to function in unpredictable settings.

Focus on Precision and Manipulation
The technical specialty of ARI lies in high-precision dexterity and manipulation. According to Nick Crance, a partner at AIX Ventures, these capabilities define a robot’s ability to physically interact with objects in the real world.
Crance noted that both dexterity and manipulation are essential for making robots functional for a variety of applications, ranging from home use to industrial environments. He described the leadership of the startup as world-class roboticists
.
The company was led by cofounders Lerrel Pinto and Xiaolong Wang, both of whom maintain strong academic ties. Pinto, who served as the CEO of ARI, is a computer science professor at New York University and previously cofounded Fauna Robotics.
Wang is a member of the electrical and computer engineering faculty at the University of California, San Diego, and previously worked as a researcher at Nvidia.
Meta’s Robotics Strategy
The acquisition signals a deepening commitment to robotics within Meta’s broader AI strategy. In 2025, the company established a dedicated robotics group within its Reality Labs division, according to an internal memo obtained by Business Insider.

Since the formation of that group, Meta has expanded its hardware team for Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL). While MSL is a separate division from Reality Labs, the two are becoming increasingly intertwined through the development of AI hardware and robotics.
Meta’s move into the intelligence layer of robotics puts it in competition with other startups that prioritize the brains
of the robot over the physical hardware. Companies such as Genesis AI, Generalist AI, and Physical Intelligence are similarly focused on AI systems that allow robots of various form factors, including humanoids, to operate across different environments.
Both Meta and AIX Ventures declined to disclose the financial terms or the total size of the acquisition.
