Meta AI Chatbot Exposes Private User Data, Raising Privacy Concerns
Updated June 13, 2025
Meta’s AI chatbot platform is under scrutiny as users unknowingly share personal information on its public “discover” feed. The platform, launched in April, allows users to interact with an AI assistant, but also features a timeline showcasing other people’s conversations. This has led to the exposure of sensitive data, including locations, phone numbers, and medical details.
One user’s query, seeking advice on where a 66-year-old man from Iowa could find a younger woman, was met with excited suggestions from the chatbot, recommending Mediterranean and Eastern European countries. This is just one example of seemingly private conversations publicly available on the platform.
Calli Schroeder, senior counsel for the Electronic Privacy Information Center, told WIRED that users are sharing a range of sensitive information. This includes medical histories, mental health details, and even home addresses, raising concerns about user understanding of the chatbot’s functionality and privacy implications.
“All of that’s incredibly concerning, both because I think it points to how people are misunderstanding what these chatbots do or what they’re for and also misunderstanding how privacy works with these structures,” Schroeder said.
Examples of exposed information include users seeking advice on terminating a renter’s tenancy, requesting academic warning notices with personal details, and discussing potential corporate tax fraud. Medical questions are also common, with users divulging struggles with bowel movements, hives, and rashes.
A meta spokesperson, Daniel Roberts, stated in an email that user chats are private unless shared thru a multi-step process. However, the company has not addressed concerns about mitigations for sharing personally identifiable information.
What’s next
The incident highlights the need for greater user awareness regarding AI chatbot privacy settings and the potential risks of sharing personal information on such platforms. Further scrutiny and potential policy changes may be necessary to protect user data on Meta AI and similar services.
