The Growing Concerns Around AI and Youth
The rapid integration of artificial intelligence into social media platforms has sparked a critical conversation about online safety, particularly for young users. Concerns center on potential exposure to inappropriate content, harmful advice, and the psychological impact of interacting with AI entities. these concerns have prompted Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, to bolster its existing safety measures.
New Parental Control Features
Meta is responding to mounting pressure with a meaningful update to its parental control features, specifically targeting AI interactions within its platforms. These changes build upon the safeguards already in place for teen accounts
– profiles designated for users under the age of 18. According to Meta, the core of the update empowers parents with greater control over their children’s access to AI chatbots.
Specifically, parents will now have two primary options: the ability to completely disable access to AI chatbots for their children, or the power to selectively block individual AI characters. This granular control allows parents to tailor the AI experience to their comfort level and their child’s maturity. The update aims to provide a more nuanced approach to AI safety than a blanket restriction.
How the New Controls Work
The implementation of these controls will likely occur within the existing Family Center on Meta’s platforms. Parents will access these settings through their own accounts and apply them to their children’s profiles.
