Meta Platforms Inc. Will lay off approximately 8,000 employees, representing 10% of its global workforce, as part of a strategic shift to increase investment in artificial intelligence, according to an internal company memo dated April 23, 2026.
The layoffs, set to begin on May 20, 2026, coincide with the cancellation of hiring for 6,000 open positions, a move intended to offset the company’s rising expenditures on AI infrastructure and development.
Meta’s decision follows a series of earlier workforce reductions, including the layoff of 11,000 employees in November 2022 and another 10,000 cuts announced four months later, as reported by Reuters in March 2026.
The company cited operational efficiency and the need to reallocate resources toward AI initiatives as the primary rationale for the latest round of job cuts. In the memo to employees, Meta’s head of HR, Janelle Gale, stated that the reductions were aimed at improving efficiency and would allow the company to “offset the other investments” being made in artificial intelligence.
As of the end of 2025, Meta reported a global workforce of 78,865 employees across more than 90 cities worldwide. The company has indicated it expects capital spending in 2026 to range between $115 billion and $135 billion, driven largely by investments in its Meta Superintelligence Labs and core business operations, a significant increase from $72.2 billion in 2025.
Industry-wide, job reductions linked to AI adoption are accelerating. Microsoft confirmed on the same day as Meta’s announcement that it would offer voluntary buyouts to some U.S. Employees, marking the first such offer in its 51-year history. Oracle disclosed plans to cut between 20,000 and 30,000 employees as it expands AI infrastructure, while Snap announced a reduction of 1,000 roles, citing advancements in artificial intelligence that would allow the same work to be performed by a smaller team.
Meta’s recent cost-cutting measures have extended beyond direct employee layoffs. The company previously announced it would shift away from third-party vendors and contractors for content moderation tasks, opting instead to rely on AI technologies to handle those functions internally.
The broader tech sector is undergoing a realignment as firms balance AI innovation with financial sustainability. Analysts note that while AI investment promises long-term gains, the immediate financial pressure is prompting difficult workforce decisions across major technology companies.
