Meta Announces Major Layoffs as AI Investments Drive Workforce Cuts Across U.S. Tech Giants

Meta Platforms Inc. Is laying off approximately 8,000 employees, representing 10% of its global workforce, as part of a strategic shift to increase investments in artificial intelligence and improve operational efficiency.

The workforce reductions will begin on May 20, 2026, according to an internal memo distributed to employees on April 23, 2026. In addition to the layoffs, Meta has canceled plans to fill 6,000 open positions across the company.

This round of job cuts follows a series of smaller reductions earlier in 2026. Microsoft confirmed on April 23, 2026, that it will offer voluntary buyouts to some U.S. Employees, affecting approximately 7% of its U.S. Workforce. Earlier in April, Snap announced plans to cut 1,000 jobs to save $500 million by the second half of 2026, citing rapid advancements in AI as justification for the reductions.

Oracle disclosed in March 2026 that it plans to cut between 20,000 and 30,000 employees as it builds out AI infrastructure, while Crypto.com reduced its workforce by 12% in March after integrating enterprise-wide AI solutions. These actions reflect a growing pattern among large technology firms to restructure operations and prioritize AI integration, even as it results in significant job losses.

Meta employs approximately 75,000 people globally, meaning the 8,000 layoffs account for roughly 10.7% of its total workforce. The company has not provided a detailed breakdown of which departments or geographic regions will be most affected by the cuts, though previous reductions have concentrated in metaverse divisions and corporate support functions.

As of the announcement, Meta did not disclose expected cost savings from the layoffs or specify how the redirected funds will be allocated across its AI initiatives.
