Meta Cuts 8,000 Jobs, Restructures for AI as $135B Investment Looms in 2026 Layoffs

Meta is cutting approximately 8,000 employees, representing about 10% of its global workforce, beginning May 20, 2026, as part of a strategic shift toward AI-driven restructuring. The layoffs, announced in an internal memo from HR head Janelle Gale, are structural in nature and not tied to employee performance.

The company is reorganizing teams into AI-focused “pods” while simultaneously canceling 6,000 open roles. Additional workforce reductions are planned for the second half of 2026, though specific details regarding timing and scale have not yet been finalized.

These actions are part of a broader initiative in which Meta is allocating between $115 billion and $135 billion toward AI infrastructure to compete with companies like OpenAI and Anthropic. Executives have indicated that future adjustments to the layoff plans may occur based on advancements in artificial intelligence capabilities.

The initial round of layoffs marks Meta’s most significant workforce reduction since the “year of efficiency” restructuring in late 2022 and early 2023, during which approximately 21,000 jobs were eliminated. As of December 31, 2025, Meta employed roughly 79,000 people globally, meaning a 10% reduction would bring the headcount to just above 71,000 following the first wave.

Industry-wide, Meta’s move reflects a growing trend among major U.S. Tech firms to tie large-scale job cuts to efficiency gains from AI automation. Similar actions have been taken by Amazon, which trimmed 30,000 corporate employees in recent months, and Block, which reduced its staff by nearly half in February 2026, with both companies citing AI-driven efficiency as a key factor.

Layoffs.fyi, a technology job cuts tracking service, reported that 73,212 employees have lost their jobs in the tech sector so far in 2026, compared to 153,000 for all of 2024. Meta’s upcoming layoffs are expected to be among the largest single-employer actions in the industry this year.
