Meta Expands Teen Account Protections to Facebook, Messenger
MENLO PARK, Calif. (AP) — Meta is extending its “teen accounts” feature, initially launched on Instagram, to Facebook and Messenger, the company announced Tuesday. The move aims to provide enhanced safety measures for younger users across its platforms.
Global Rollout Follows Initial Launch
Currently available in the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom, Meta plans to introduce these accounts with enhanced privacy settings to additional countries in the near future.
“Today we are announcing new protections and the extension of teen accounts to Facebook and Messenger, to offer parents increased peace of mind on all applications in the group,” Meta said in a statement.
Protective Measures for Young Users
These accounts,designed for users between 13 and 17 years old,incorporate default safety parameters. These parameters restrict exposure to inappropriate content and limit unwanted contact. For users under 16, these settings cannot be altered without parental consent.
According to Meta, teen users will also receive bedtime notification limits, reminders to take breaks after 60 minutes of use, and restrictions on who can contact them, limiting interactions to followers or existing connections.
Instagram’s Enhanced Protections
Meta also unveiled strengthened protection settings for teen accounts on Instagram.
Minors under 16 will now require parental permission to initiate live video broadcasts. Parental authorization will also be mandatory to disable the blurring feature for images suspected of containing nudity in direct messages on Instagram, the company stated.

Since its introduction on instagram in September 2024, 54 million users have created teen accounts, according to Meta’s data.
