Meta Explores New Home Theater Experience for Quest and Beyond

Meta, the tech giant behind the popular Quest VR headsets, is cooking up an immersive home theater experience for its users. Mark Rabkin, Vice President leading Horizon OS and Quest, dropped this hint in a recent X post, revealing that the company is experimenting with a dedicated home theater environment for Horizon OS. This isn’t just about Quest; Horizon OS is set to become the operating system for a variety of third-party headsets.

This wouldn’t be Meta’s first rodeo in the VR cinema scene. Way back in 2014, they launched Oculus Cinema for Samsung Gear VR, followed by Oculus Video and Oculus Social. However, as history has shown, maintaining a first-party theater environment can be challenging. Meta’s latest attempt, Horizon Home on Quest, while offering shared video watching, lacked the bells and whistles of a dedicated home theater app.

Rabkin hinted that Meta is working on all fronts, exploring lighting effects and sound quality to enhance the immersive experience. While it’s unlikely that Meta’s next theater environment will encompass all streaming services, providing an easily accessible, built-in way to watch your own content in VR would be a significant step forward.
