Instagram and Facebook Hit by Global Outage, Thousands Report Issues
Thousands of users across the U.S. reported problems accessing Instagram and Facebook on Wednesday morning, according to outage tracking website Downdetector.com. The issues follow a similar outage experienced by whatsapp earlier this week.
The problems began around 12:50 a.m.Eastern Time, with over 100,000 Facebook users and nearly 70,000 Instagram users reporting incidents on downdetector. By 7:00 a.m. Eastern Time, the number of reports for both platforms had exceeded 1,000.
While the exact cause of the outage remains unclear, Downdetector data suggests a widespread technical issue affecting users globally. The website relies on user reports, so the actual number of affected users could be higher.
This isn’t the first time meta Platforms,the parent company of Facebook and Instagram,has experienced service disruptions. In March, both platforms suffered a global outage lasting over two hours, impacting tens of thousands of users. Another outage occurred in October, but services were restored within an hour.
As of this writing, Meta has not released a statement regarding the outage. Users took to social media to express their frustration and share updates on the situation.
