Meta Quest Update v72 Preview: Key Features and Improvements
The upcoming Quest update v72 is currently in beta for Public Test Channel (PTC) participants. Here are the key features and improvements expected:
1. Live Captions
Table of Contents
The update includes enhancements to live captions. Users will find a feature that transcribes spoken content directly on the headset. This allows for improved privacy and faster performance. It supports end-to-end encrypted apps but requires a download of 150 MB.
2. Virtual Selfie Camera
A system-wide selfie camera feature might be introduced. This could facilitate avatar calls, allowing users to connect with friends on Messenger while using their avatars in Horizon Home.
3. PC VR Apps Folder
The update introduces a new folder in the app library for PC VR apps when using Quest Link. This change aligns with recent improvements made to the PC app.
4. Launch 2D Apps in the Room
Users can now open apps by simply dragging their icons into the virtual space. Previously, apps had to be opened first in a docked state.
5. Refreshed Boot Screen Branding
The name of the operating system will appear on the boot screen, enhancing brand visibility.
6. Passthrough Keyboard Cutout
A new passthrough keyboard cutout feature has been reported, displaying a soft gradient. This feature had been removed in a previous version but appears to be returning in v72.
7. Dedicated Photo Gallery App
Meta is developing a dedicated Photo Gallery app. This app could centralize photo viewing, which is currently scattered across different Meta applications.
8. Smart Storage
A feature called “Smart Storage” may be included. This will automatically uninstall apps that haven’t been used for a certain time.
9. Extra Pinned Apps Slot
An additional slot for pinned apps may be added to the dock, bringing the total to six.
Context: Public Test Channel (PTC)
The PTC allows users to access new features and updates ahead of official releases. PTC software may have bugs, and joining is based on availability.
