Meta is testing a new optional subscription service for WhatsApp called WhatsApp Plus, which offers enhanced personalization features and is part of a broader strategy to introduce premium tiers across its messaging platforms.
The subscription model, currently in beta testing with a limited group of users, includes expanded pinned chats, custom lists, new chat themes, personalized app icons, and unique notification and ringtones for specific chats or contact lists. Free users can pin up to three conversations, while WhatsApp Plus subscribers will be able to pin up to 20 chats.
According to reports from WABetaInfo cited in multiple tech publications, WhatsApp Plus may cost approximately €2.49 per month in Europe and around 229 Pakistani rupees in Pakistan. Meta has not officially confirmed global pricing but has indicated a potential one-month free trial for eligible testers during the feedback-gathering phase.
The initiative aligns with Meta’s existing Instagram Plus subscription, reflecting a cross-app push to monetize premium features in its social and messaging ecosystem. A Meta spokesperson told TechCrunch that the company is “starting with a small test to gather feedback and ensure we’re building something people find genuinely valuable.”
