The legal complaint was filed in the US District Court for the Central District of California by Hyde Lane, the corporate entity that operates as Demon Hunter. Formed in Seattle in 2000, the band has released 12 studio albums and used its name commercially since 2001, holding US trademark registrations that cover recorded music, clothing, and other products.

Trademark Overlap and Consumer Confusion Claims

The lawsuit outlines several specific instances of consumer confusion resulting from the shared naming convention. CNN noted that the incident occurred in May, and the buyer subsequently contacted the band to request a refund after realizing the mistake. The complaint argues that Netflix’s massive commercial presence could also cause audiences to mistakenly assume the long-established metal group is derived from or affiliated with the streaming franchise. Netflix is no more entitled to use the mark KPOP DEMON HUNTERS than it would be to launch a recording artist, live touring show and merchandise under the marks KPOP METALLICA, KPOP U2 or KPOP BLACK SABBATH, the lawsuit states, as reported by CNN. Hyde Lane asserts in the court filing that the brand carefully built over the past quarter century now faces an existential crisis.

Netflix Response and Franchise Growth

Netflix and AEG Presents announced plans in May for a global concert tour tied to the animated hit, though specific cities, dates, and ticket details have not yet been released. According to CNN, Netflix rejected the allegations in a formal statement, writing, These allegations are without merit. Netflix has created an Academy Award-winning global phenomenon with KPop Demon Hunters that has inspired fans around the world with its powerful music, storytelling, and characters. We look forward to vigorously defending this matter. Produced by Sony Pictures Animation and released on Netflix in June 2025, KPop Demon Hunters follows a fictional K-pop group named HUNTR/X that uses secret powers to protect fans from supernatural threats. According to Netflix data cited by CNN, the film has amassed more than 600 million views and spent 52 consecutive weeks in the platform’s Global Top 10, while its soundtrack has generated over 15 billion streams worldwide. The film also won two Academy Awards, including Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for the track Golden.

Demands and Ongoing Legal Proceedings

Through the lawsuit, Hyde Lane is seeking a jury trial alongside a court order to prevent Netflix, Netflix Studios, and AEG Presents from using the KPop Demon Hunters title for recorded music, live performances, and merchandise. The company has also requested restitution and unspecified damages. Netflix Studios maintains its own trademark registrations for KPop Demon Hunters covering certain merchandise categories, with additional applications pending.
