The Legacy of Snake eater Reborn
Next week,on August 28th,the iconic action-stealth game Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater returns as Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. This isn’t simply a graphical update; it’s a comprehensive remake aiming to modernize the experience while remaining faithful to the original’s core. The key changes center around updated visual effects leveraging 20 years of advancements in gaming technology, a revamped control scheme, and, notably, the absence of its original creator.
Kojima’s Absence Confirmed
Following the proclamation of the remake, speculation was rife regarding the involvement of Hideo Kojima, the visionary mind behind the original Metal Gear Solid series. Kojima famously departed from Konami in 2015. However, Konami has now definitively confirmed that Kojima had no role in the advancement of Delta: Snake Eater. “So we didn’t really consult Kojima-san on this. Through this, it was just the current Konami staff,” stated Noriaki Okamura, lead producer of the remake, during a press event in New York city on August 5th.
This decision reflects a clear direction from Konami to forge ahead with the remake independently, relying on the expertise of its current development team.
A Creator’s Disinterest
Adding another layer to the story, Kojima himself has publicly stated he has no intention of playing the remake. In a recent interview with Ssense, the creator of Death Stranding plainly said, “No, I won’t,” when asked if he woudl experience the new version of Metal Gear Solid 3.While the reasoning behind this decision remains private, it underscores a definitive separation between Kojima and his former employer’s current projects.
Despite this, the development team at Konami expressed a hope, albeit a cautious one, that Kojima might reconsider. ”We’re not sure what he would wont to do, but we want to deliver this game whilst being very respectful of all the people that we previously worked with as well, and we would love for them to see it, too,” Okamura explained. “So we’re hoping that we can deliver a great game that people can enjoy, but we’re not too sure.”
Balancing Nostalgia and Modernization
Konami is acutely aware of the passionate fanbase surrounding Metal Gear Solid 3. To honor this legacy, the developers have meticulously rerecorded all dialogue with the original voice cast, including David Hayter as Naked Snake. This commitment to authenticity aims to preserve the narrative and emotional impact of the original story.
However, the team also recognizes the need to appeal to a broader audience, including new players unfamiliar with the series. To that end, Metal Gear Solid Delta introduces a new control scheme designed to be more accessible, alongside the option to utilize the original “legacy” controls for purists. “The main thing we have changed…is that we have kept in mind that there are both going to be old fans who already love the series and new users,” explained Okamura. Creative producer Yuji Korekado added that the new control scheme is intended to “share what was so amazing about the original game to a new audience.”
