Researchers compared ‍blood serum levels of various metals in patients who took metformin versus those who did not.

Published in BMJ Open Diabetes Research & Care, the study provides the ⁣first clinical evidence of altered blood⁣ metal levels in patients taking ⁣metformin. The team found that patients on metformin had significantly ⁤lower⁤ levels of copper and iron,and higher levels of zinc.”It is significant that we could show this in humans,” stated Dr. Ogawa, lead researcher on the project.

“Imeglimin is thought to have a different method‍ of action, and we‍ are already conducting studies to compare the effects the two drugs have,” said Dr. Ogawa. This comparative research aims to determine whether the ⁣metal-altering effects of metformin are crucial to its therapeutic ⁢benefits,⁢ or if imeglimin can achieve similar results through a different pathway.

The Bigger Picture: Towards Metal-Based Diabetes Therapies

The Kobe University team ⁢emphasizes that understanding the link between‍ metformin,metal levels,and diabetes is about more than just refining existing treatments. ⁢ They envision a future where manipulating metal concentrations in the body could lead to entirely new therapeutic strategies.

“We need both clinical trials⁣ and animal experiments to pinpoint the causal relationship between the drug’s action and its effects,” Dr. Ogawa explained. “if such studies progress further, they may lead to the growth of new drugs for diabetes and its complications by properly adjusting the metal concentrations in⁢ the body.”
