From Atlanta to Nashville: An American Idol Hopeful
Slater Nalley, describing himself as a “believer” and an “artist” on Instagram, was discovered by American Idol producers on social media. Encouraged to audition in Nashville, Tennessee, Nalley’s performance left a lasting impression.
Nalley’s lifelong passion for music began early. “I’ve always been singing. I’ve always done like musicals and things like that,” he said. His artistic path solidified around age 13 when his aunt gifted him a guitar, sparking his songwriting journey: “when I started songwriting around 13, when my aunt gave me a guitar, I was able to start, start messing around with it and figuring out what I really love and who I am as an artist.”
A Song for a Teacher: A Touching Tribute
Nalley channeled his songwriting talents into a heartfelt tribute for Michelle Davis,a teacher at The Lovett School in atlanta, whose son,Carter Davis, was tragically murdered nine years prior. Carter Davis and Natalie Henderson, both 17,were found dead in Roswell. Jeffrey Hazelwood was sentenced to life in prison for the murders.
Davis penned a poem about her son’s passing, which Nalley transformed into a song. This collaboration created a profound connection. “To share that special bond with, with a teacher and, and more than just a teacher, being able to share that special bond with a teacher that is now like one of my best friends forever and their family too, you know, just it’s really special,” nalley explained.
the Audition: Tears and Confidence
Before Nalley’s audition, Michelle Davis shared the story of her son with judges Lionel Richie, Luke bryan, and Carrie Underwood. “We went to Nashville together, my family and her family, and…right before I went in,[they asked] ‘Hey,would you like her to tell the story of Carter before you go in there?’ And there was no hesitation in my voice when I said,‘Absolutely.’ And she went in there,” he recounted.
The emotional weight of the song and the story behind it moved the judges to tears. nalley described his reaction: “When I finished and I saw the judges crying, I definitely was confident, but I didn’t know if they were crying because they hated it.” Despite the uncertainty, Nalley remains grounded. “Ultimately, I’m just like everybody else.I just have a story to tell and a song to sing in this competition.”
