Metropolitano Stadium Upgrades Position Barranquilla as Global Football Hub

Barranquilla’s Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Meléndez is undergoing a sweeping transformation that will position the venue among the world’s elite football stadiums, city officials announced this week. The ambitious renovation project, led by Barranquilla Mayor Alejandro Char, aims to modernize the historic stadium in time to host the final of the 2026 Copa Sudamericana, a goal the city has formally submitted to CONMEBOL.

Capacity Expansion and Structural Upgrades

The renovation will increase the stadium’s seating capacity from 45,994 to over 60,000 for football matches, with the ability to accommodate up to 75,000 spectators for concerts and other large-scale events. The expansion is part of a broader effort to eliminate the existing athletics track and lower the playing field by approximately 3.8 meters, bringing fans closer to the action—a longstanding request from local supporters.

The project, awarded to the Consorcio Metro Estadio—a partnership of Convías S.A.S., Terrapin S.A.S., Proyectos y Gestión del Desarrollo S.A.S., and Ingeniería S.A.S.—is backed by a $172.969 billion COP (over $45 million USD) investment from local government funds. Construction is already underway, with completion targeted ahead of the Copa Sudamericana final.

Technological and Fan-Centric Improvements

Beyond structural changes, the renovation prioritizes technological advancements and fan comfort. The stadium will feature a hybrid grass pitch, a cutting-edge system designed to enhance durability and playing conditions. A state-of-the-art LED ribbon board and high-definition screens will provide immersive visual experiences for spectators.

One of the most significant upgrades addresses a persistent concern among fans: restroom facilities. The number of bathrooms will more than double, increasing from 363 to 827, while expanded concession areas and premium seating options will further elevate the matchday experience. Locker rooms, press facilities, and VIP zones are also being redesigned to meet international standards.
