The New York Mets have named Lew Sherr, the current CEO and executive director of the U.S. Tennis Association (USTA), as their new president of business operations. Sherr’s move to the Mets marks a meaningful shift in⁤ leadership for both organizations.

Sherr, who has been with the USTA since 2010 and CEO since⁣ 2022, will remain with the tennis organization through June before joining the ⁣Mets in July.⁢ His‍ tenure at the USTA saw growth in tennis participation nationwide, alongside increased attendance, sponsorships,‍ and revenue at the US Open.

The Mets’ pursuit of Sherr underscores⁣ their commitment to expanding their business ventures. Mets owners Steve and ⁣Alex Cohen are actively seeking one of three available casino licenses from ‍the New York State Gaming Commission. Their plans include ⁢developing a casino, hotel, and entertainment district near Citi Field.

Sherr expressed his⁤ enthusiasm for joining the Mets, citing the Cohens’ commitment to ⁤the team⁣ and the community. he noted the energy surrounding the⁤ team and their foundation’s work.

The⁢ declaration ‍follows the departure of Scott havens, who served as the⁢ Mets’ president ⁣of business operations since December 2023. Several other key ⁢personnel⁤ have also recently ⁢left the organization.

The USTA has appointed Brian Vahaly, chairman of the ⁤USTA Board, and ⁢Andrea Hirsch, the USTA’s chief operating officer and chief legal officer, as interim co-CEOs while they search for Sherr’s permanent replacement.

⁤ “For right now,my focus is the smoothest possible transition,” Sherr said. “But I’m hugely excited about what’s happening over there. (Mets owners) Steve and Alex ⁢Cohen have made a commitment to that ⁤team⁢ that is unrivaled in sports.”
