Metz, france – The Union des métiers et industries de l’hôtellerie (UMIH), representing the vibrant hospitality industry in Metz, celebrated a triumphant year with an innovative “open house” event on January 8th.The union welcomed over 500 members in 2024,a significant increase of 100 from the previous year. UMIH President Christophe Thiriet expressed his satisfaction, stating, “we are being heard and our voices are making a difference.”

Despite a challenging summer season, the hospitality sector in Metz saw a boost thanks to favorable weather during the holiday markets. “The summer was tough for the industry, but thankfully, there was hardly any rain during the Christmas market period, which really helped tourism and we expect hotel occupancy to rise by about 5%,” Thiriet noted.

Throughout the year, UMIH actively engaged the community with a variety of events, including the “Best Apprentice in Moselle” competition, the innovative “Urban Feast,” the conventional waiter and waitress race, and a festive Christmas chalet. These initiatives will continue in 2025, with a focus on expanding beyond the city center of Metz.

“We’re working to create more events in areas like Thionville,” Thiriet explained. “We’re also collaborating with the Sablon merchants’ federation on a new project.”

A major highlight on the horizon is the Michelin Guide ceremony on March 31st, an event Thiriet believes will considerably benefit the region. “It will be a great chance to showcase the Moselle region and the city of Metz,” he said.

As Thiriet took office in 2021, UMIH has prioritized decentralization, appointing territorial delegates to strengthen connections with businesses across the department. This approach ensures that the needs of diverse communities, such as those in the Pays de Sarrebourg, Moselle-Est, and Thionville, are addressed effectively.

Despite the positive outlook, the hospitality industry continues to face challenges, notably in recruitment. UMIH remains committed to training and promoting its professions.
