Violence Erupts Across Mexico Following Cartel Leader’s Death
A wave of violence has swept across Mexico following the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” the head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). The cartel leader was killed during a military operation seeking his arrest on Sunday, sparking retaliatory unrest in at least 20 of Mexico’s 31 states.
Satellite imagery captured on Sunday reveals the extent of the violence, particularly in the resort town of Puerto Vallarta in Jalisco state. Images taken by intelligence company Vantor show fires burning at a shopping centre, a Costco store, and a car parts shop. Roadblocks constructed from burning vehicles have also been documented, disrupting traffic along coastal routes.
The unrest unfolded approximately 170km (105 miles) from where “El Mencho” was captured and died in custody. The Mexican military has responded by deploying nearly 10,000 soldiers in an attempt to suppress the violence, which has already claimed the lives of at least 25 members of the National Guard.
The BBC has verified footage and images of the escalating conflict, highlighting the widespread impact of “El Mencho’s” death. The situation remains fluid, with ongoing reports of further incidents across the country.
Beyond the immediate crisis in Mexico, international attention is also focused on the movement of the USS Gerald R Ford aircraft carrier to Greece, as part of a broader build-up of US military assets in the Middle East and Mediterranean. Reports suggest the vessel is experiencing plumbing issues, though social media has circulated older videos falsely portraying more severe problems.
Meanwhile, fact-checking efforts are underway to examine claims surrounding the UK’s student finance system and youth unemployment rates. Teams are preparing to verify statements made during Donald Trump’s State of the Union address later tonight.
