McLaren and Red Bull Struggle with Car Handling at Recent Race
Table of Contents
Analysis of performance issues faced by Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen, highlighting challenges with car control and grip.
Piastri’s Challenges in Slippery Conditions
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella identified a recurring issue for Oscar Piastri: difficulty controlling the car when track conditions are less grippy. According to Stella, Piastri ”struggles to use the car when the conditions are more sliding,” a situation reminiscent of the conditions experienced at the 2023 United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas (Formula 1 – 2023 United States Grand Prix Race Result).
Verstappen’s Struggles with Oversteer
Max Verstappen, driving for red Bull Racing, faced a different but equally significant problem. He was visibly battling oversteer – a loss of rear tire grip – almost continuously throughout the “Esses,” a fast sequence of left-hand and right-hand turns on the track. This instability was apparent in onboard camera footage.
Verstappen explained that the team attempted numerous adjustments, even during qualifying, but didn’t fully resolve the issue. “We tried a lot of stuff, even going into qualifying, and got it a little bit wrong in some areas of the track,” he stated.
Lack of Grip as the Root Cause
The core problem for Verstappen appeared to be a general lack of grip. “All weekend we couldn’t find the grip in the car and it is indeed something we need to understand,” he said. He emphasized that the track demands precision, and sliding is detrimental to performance. “When you have those issues you are sliding a lot and on this track you cannot afford that. This whole weekend has been tough.”
Points Implications
Verstappen’s performance, despite the challenges, allowed him to reduce the points gap to Oscar Piastri. He has closed to within 40 points of Piastri after achieving three wins and a second-place finish in the last four races. This demonstrates the competitive nature of the championship and the importance of consistent performance.
