Mexico Girls Wrestling 2023: New Talent and Experienced Leaders Aim for State Success
Mexico Girls Wrestling Program Preview
The Mexico girls wrestling program has new faces and returning talent this season. Alexus Johns, the program’s first-ever state finalist, and Abby Bowen, a state qualifier, lead a roster of about 11 girls with varying experience levels.
Head coach Tony Senor noted a shortage in lighter weight classes. The initial lineup includes returning wrestlers Lilly Debo at 100 or 105 pounds, Alyssa Knight at 130 or 135, Bowen at hopefully 140, and Johns at heavyweight. Newcomer Marali Herrera is set to compete at 135 or 140 pounds.
Senor is pleased with how quickly new wrestlers are learning. He emphasized the need to focus on strategy and match situations as they progress.
Senor aims to qualify at least three wrestlers for state, including Johns and Bowen. He believes Johns can win or medal at state, and he wants Bowen to earn her first medal as well.
To prepare, the team must focus on practice and competitions. Senor highlighted newcomer Sophia Morris, who may wrestle in the 155, 170, or potentially 190-pound class. He considers her and other newcomers like Heaven Seabolt and heavyweight Raygen Hoffman to show potential.
Matty Tolbert returns from injury as the lone senior and is essential for team leadership. Senor relies on her to help guide the newer wrestlers and create a supportive environment.
The coaching staff has expanded with Kaylynn Pehle and Katie Bowen, who both have experience in the program. They plan to participate in tough tournaments like the Battle on the Katy Trail and the Versailles tournament, which serves as a preview of state competition.
Senor hopes for at least a North Central Missouri Conference title and individual honors for his wrestlers. The team’s main objective is to achieve all-district status and qualify for state.
Senor stated, “Every day, every match, every practice, every tournament is a chance to learn and grow.” He aims to develop the sport within Mexico as well as the teams’ skills.
